BIRKEN, pop 109, a station on the Pacific Great Eastern Rwy (see BC RAIL) 30 km north of PEMBERTON, was named by the early explorer A.C. ANDERSON after HMS Birkenhead, as were a nearby lake and provincial PARK. The soldiers on this famous British troop ship, commanded by Anderson's relative, Lt Col Alexander Seton, died heroically to save women and child passengers.
