BOSTON BAR, pop 233, 42 km north of YALE, overlooks the top end of HELLS GATE in the Fraser Canyon (see FRASER R). During the 1858 GOLD RUSH a MINING camp grew up near the NLAKA'PAMUX (Thompson) village of Kwi.owh.um, or Koia'um ("to pick berries"). Once the gold rush passed, the population dwindled. Due to flooding in 1894 the community was relocated to higher ground north of the original site. An aerial tramway that crossed the canyon to NORTH BEND in 1940–86 has been replaced by a bridge....
