BOWYER ISLAND lies on the east side of HOWE SOUND 4 km north of HORSESHOE BAY. Herbert Bingham purchased it in 1926 and made the south end into an estate with gardens, farm animals and a large house. His wife Annie called it her "Treasure Island." In 1999 Bingham descendants still owned the southern section; numerous part-time residents owned the rest. The island was named for British Admiral Sir George Bowyer by Capt G.H. RICHARDS during his 1859 survey.
