CALVERT ISLAND is a large, mountainous island on the Central Coast opposite RIVERS INLET. It is separated from the mainland by FITZ HUGH SOUND, a busy section of the INSIDE PASSAGE. The northern half of the island is part of HAKAI RECREATION AREA. Before the arrival of Europeans, the HEILTSUK (Bella Bella) and OWEEKENO nations used the shores of the island for food gathering, and there was a village site at the north end in Kwakshua Inlet.
