CAPE MUDGE, village, pop 181 (2001), located at the south end of QUADRA ISLAND, looks across DISCOVERY PASSAGE to CAMPBELL RIVER about halfway up VANCOUVER ISLAND's east coast. It was established in the mid-19th century by members of the Lekwiltok, aKWAKWAKA'WAKW (Kwakiutl) nation, as they moved south into territory formerly held by the Coast Salish (see SALISHAN FIRST NATIONS), and became the main village of the We-Wai-Kai nation.
