Discovery Passage


DISCOVERY PASSAGE is a narrow tidal surge channel (see TIDES) running between VANCOUVER ISLAND and QUADRA ISLAND north from CAMPBELL RIVER. At its top end around ROCK BAY it merges into JOHNSTONE STRAIT. The area attracts thousands of seabirds, SEA LIONS and SEALS, especially during winter HERRING season, and is known internationally for its SALMON fishing. RIPPLE ROCK, a treacherous obstacle to navigation in SEYMOUR NARROWS at the south end of the passage, was destroyed by explosives in 1958....
