CHASE RIVER was a farming (see AGRICULTURE) and COAL mining settlement at the mouth of the Chase R, 5 km south of NANAIMO on VANCOUVER ISLAND. A post office operated here from 1910 to 1919. Its name supposedly derives from an incident in 1852, when colonial authorities chased after a group of HALKOMELEM people. The location is now within Nanaimo city limits.
