Clifton, Heber Louis

CLIFTON, Heber Louis, hereditary Tsimshian chief (b 1872; d 1 Jan 1964). He was raised in the village of METLAKATLA where he was educated by William DUNCAN. When the Gitga'ata people left Metlakatla and built HARTLEY BAY in their traditional territory, he emerged as their leader. He was a well-known fisher and tugboat captain on the North Coast and one of the founders of the NATIVE BROTHERHOOD OF BC in 1931.
