CUMBERLAND, village, pop 2,762 (2006), is located on the east side of VANCOUVER ISLAND near Comox Lk, 6 km south of COURTENAY. It was founded in 1888 by Robert DUNSMUIR in the middle of a rich COAL mining district. The original townsite was called Union Camp; a newly developed area, named Cumberland after the English county, became the overall name in 1898.
