GILLIES BAY, pop 413, on the west side of TEXADA ISLAND 18 km south of POWELL RIVER, developed as an AGRICULTURAL and LOGGING settlement in the 1910s and 1920s. Nearby iron ore deposits were identified in 1871 and worked sporadically, but not mined on a large scale until 1952 (see MINING). Texada Mines Ltd ran open-pit and underground operations until 1976, employing 200 people and shipping ore to Japan.
