Haberl, James Edward

HABERL, James Edward, mountaineer, photographer, writer (b 28 Feb 1958, Montreal; d 29 Apr 1999, University Range, AK). He started climbing early and scaled Mt McKinley at age 24. He and Dan CULVER were the first Canadians to reach the summit of K2 (1993), the world's second-highest peak (8,616 m). Haberl taught recreation management at Capilano College, ran MOUNTAINEERING tours and led a well-publicized trek up Mt Kilimanjaro in 1998 to raise funds for research into Alzheimer's disease. A...
