HAYNES, John Carmichael, public official, rancher (b 6 July 1831, Landscape, Ireland; d 6 July 1888, Princeton). He came to BC in 1858 to join the new PROVINCIAL POLICE force. After serving in the force, he became a justice of the peace and collector of customs in the Interior, and eventually a GOLD commissioner and district court judge. At the same time, he was acquiring land around OSOYOOS; he established a cattle ranch there. By 1882 he owned 90 sq km of ranchland, lived in a fine house...
