Hemmingsen, Mathias "Matt"

HEMMINGSEN, Mathias "Matt," logger (b July 1876, WI; d 1967, Victoria). He began logging in Wisconsin in 1894 as a cant-hook man, piling logs for river driving (see LOGGING). He later became a riverman and went to work for J.A. Humbird in 1902. Soon after, Humbird sent him to BC to drive logs down the Puntledge and Tsolum rivers, near COURTENAY.
