Hilliers

HILLIERS, pop 1,283, a farming (see AGRICULTURE) and SAWMILL settlement and ESQUIMALT & NANAIMO RWY station 42 km northwest of NANAIMO on VANCOUVER ISLAND, was originally known as Hilliers Crossing. Named after Thomas Hellier, an early local settler, it was the site of a small RWY LOGGING operation between 1919 and 1936. In the 1940s and 1950s, a DOUKHOBOUR community here was led by Michael "The Archangel" Verigin.
