IRVING, John, steamboat captain (b 24 Nov 1854, Portland; d 10 Aug 1936, Vancouver). In 1872, when he was still a teenager, he took over the PIONEER LINE of FRASER R steamboats founded by his father William IRVING. Over a 30-year career he was the leading captain on the river operating the most successful navigation company in the province. He merged the Pioneer Line with the HBC fleet of steamers in 1883 to form the CANADIAN PACIFIC NAVIGATION CO which he managed until it was sold to the CPR...
