ISLAND COPPER MINE, at one time the third-largest COPPER mine in Canada, was built at the north end of VANCOUVER ISLAND near PORT HARDY. Owned by BHP Copper (formerly Utah Construction and Mining Ltd), it went into production in 1971 and closed at the end of 1995.
