JEWITT, John Rodgers, blacksmith (b 21 May 1783, England; d 7 Jan 1821, Hartford, CT). The son of a blacksmith, he took up his father's trade and in 1802 sailed as an armourer aboard the trading vessel BOSTON bound for the Northwest Coast. On 22 Mar 1803 the vessel was attacked in NOOTKA SOUND by a group of local NUU-CHAH-NULTH led by Chief MAQUINNA, perhaps in revenge for insults he had suffered.
