MARA, pop 327, an AGRICULTURAL community on the west bank of the Shuswap R, 14 km east of SALMON ARM, is just south of Mara Lk, a popular summer recreation spot lined with resorts and campgrounds. A stagecoach stop between SICAMOUS and VERNON, it was later a station on the SHUSWAP & OKANAGAN RWY. A WWI internment camp for enemy aliens was located nearby in 1915–17.
