NAKWAKTO RAPIDS form the 300-m-wide entrance to SEYMOUR and BELIZE inlets on the mainland coast, opposite the north end of VANCOUVER ISLAND. The tidal rapids through the narrows reach 30 km/h, making it the fastest tidal channel on the coast. It is named for the local KWAKWAKA'WAKW First Nation, who occupied the area before moving to PORT HARDY in 1962.
