Naylor, Joseph "Joe"


NAYLOR, Joseph "Joe," miner, labour activist (b 1872, Wigan, England; d 5 Oct 1946, Cumberland). An organizer for the WESTERN FEDERATION OF MINERS before 1910, he came to prominence in CUMBERLAND during the VANCOUVER ISLAND coal miners' strike of 1912–14 as local president of the United Mine Workers of America. After the strike he was blacklisted by the employer (see COAL MINING, VANCOUVER ISLAND). In 1918 he was arrested for aiding draft evaders. Charges were dropped but they prevented him...
