Newcastle Island


NEWCASTLE ISLAND, 3.36 sq km, lies in NANAIMO Harbour on the east coast of VANCOUVER ISLAND. The entire island is a provincial MARINE PARK. In 1853 the HBC, acting on information supplied by the SNUNEYMUXW (Nanaimo) inhabitants, opened a COAL mine on the island. The company called it Newcastle after the English mining town, and coal was mined there until 1883.
