NIMPKISH LAKE, 36.5 sq km, is a long (22 km), narrow lake on northern VANCOUVER ISLAND near PORT McNEILL. It is fed by the Nimpkish R, rising in the mountains near STRATHCONA PROVINCIAL PARK. The river also drains the lake into Broughton Strait opposite ALERT BAY. An ECOLOGICAL RESERVE in the lower portion of the river protects a stand of some of the tallest DOUGLAS FIRS in Canada.
