PORT McNEILL, town, pop 2,821 (2001), is on the east side of VANCOUVER ISLAND at the top of JOHNSTONE STRAIT, 195 km north of CAMPBELL RIVER. Named for HBC factor William McNEILL, it was established as a LOGGING community in 1937 and was soon the administrative base for some 20,000 sq km of surrounding forest.
