NOOTKA, on the southeast side of Nootka Island in NOOTKA SOUND on the west coast of VANCOUVER ISLAND, was the site of a cannery, pilchard reduction plant (see SARDINE, PACIFIC) and boat repair facility from 1917 to 1950. Originally established by the Nootka Packing Co, it was later sold to the CANADIAN FISHING CO. Many Mowachaht (see NUU-CHAH-NULTH) people from nearby YUQUOT worked here. It later became the site of a FISHING resort.
