NOTCH HILL, pop 452, 20 km northwest of SALMON ARM near SHUSWAP LK, was once a thriving railway community, a base for CPR "pusher" locomotives, with freight and maintenance facilities and a Columbia River Lumber Co SAWMILL. Today it is a quiet farming settlement (see AGRICULTURE) with a number of interesting old buildings. It was named by G.M. DAWSON for the gap through the Shuswap Highlands where the railway line now passes.
