PORT HUGHES, 26 km northeast of TOFINO at the head of Bedwell Sound, was a short-lived MINING camp on the west coast of VANCOUVER ISLAND. Originally called Bear River, it was established in the 1890s to serve several GOLD and COPPER mines on the Bedwell (then Bear) R. A hotel was built but the boom was soon over. Small-scale mining continued in the area until the 1960s.
