Portland Island


PORTLAND ISLAND, at 1.82 sq km one of the smaller GULF ISLANDS, lies just east of Swartz Bay south of SALTSPRING ISLAND. It is named for a 19th-century British warship. Once home to HAWAIIAN settlers, including William NAUKANA, it was owned from the late 1920s to 1937 by Gen Frank "One-Arm" Sutton, a British soldier of fortune who raised racehorses there.
