San Josef Bay

SAN JOSEF BAY was a pioneer settlement at the mouth of the San Josef R 55 km west of PORT HARDY on the northwest corner of VANCOUVER ISLAND. Many members of the Danish colony (see DANES) at CAPE SCOTT moved here and to nearby Sea Otter Cove in the early 1900s and Henry Ohlsen opened a store. The settlers sold farm produce to surrounding LOGGING camps and canneries, but survival was difficult and most people left by WWI. The radar base west of HOLBERG was also known as San Josef.
