SECHART was the site of a WHALING station at the head of BARKLEY SOUND on the west coast of VANCOUVER ISLAND. The Pacific Whaling Co began whaling in 1905, using steam catcher boats to kill the whales offshore and tow them to the station. Soon WHALES began to disappear and whaling ceased in 1917. The buildings served as a pilchard or PACIFIC SARDINE packing plant during the 1930s, then were abandoned.
