VANCOUVER INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT on SEA ISLAND in RICHMOND, south of VANCOUVER, is BC's largest AIRPORT. In 2017 it handled 24 million travellers. The airport opened on 22 July 1931 and replaced Lansdowne Field on LULU ISLAND, leased by the city since 1928. Flights connected to VICTORIA and Seattle, and in 1938 Trans Canada Airlines began passenger service to Winnipeg and Montreal.
