Vargas Island


VARGAS ISLAND, 28 sq km, in CLAYOQUOT SOUND 6 km northwest of TOFINO on the west coast of VANCOUVER ISLAND, was an important summer village site of the Ahousaht First Nation of the NUU-CHAH-NULTH (Nootka). Named by SPANISH EXPLORERS for a government official, it was settled by British immigrant farmers in the 1910s but abandoned by them after WWI.
