VICTORIA & SIDNEY RAILWAY ran up the SAANICH PENINSULA north from VICTORIA 27 km to SIDNEY on southern VANCOUVER ISLAND. Opened in 1894, it was dubbed the "Cordwood Limited" because its early locomotives burned wood for fuel. It was purchased in 1901 by the GREAT NORTHERN RWY, which had ambitions to connect it by ferry to the mainland.
