WASHINGTON, MOUNT (el 1,590 m) located 30 km west of COURTENAY on central VANCOUVER ISLAND at the eastern edge of STRATHCONA PROVINCIAL PARK, is one of BC's premier SKIING areas. It is the second busiest winter recreation area in the province after WHISTLER, with its 5 lifts, dozens of downhill runs and 35 km of cross-country ski trails. In 1995 it received more snow than any other ski resort in the world. It is named for Rear Admiral John Washington, a British naval hydrographer.
