WINTER HARBOUR, pop 51, is a small fishing village in Forward Inlet, an arm of QUATSINO SOUND on the northwest coast of VANCOUVER ISLAND, 60 km by road from PORT HARDY. Originally called Queenstown, it was the site of a clam cannery built in 1904, and it attracted DANISH, NORWEGIAN and GERMAN settlers from around the North Island. Albert Moore built a floating logging camp at the site in 1936 and LOGGING, commercial FISHING and AQUACULTURE form the basis of the local economy.
