BANFIELD, William Eddy, trader and Indian agent (date and place of birth unknown; d 20 Oct 1862, Barkley Sound). He arrived in VICTORIA in 1846 as a carpenter on a British naval vessel. After leaving the navy in 1849, he began trading from a boat along the west coast of VANCOUVER ISLAND. In 1861 Gov James DOUGLAS appointed him an Indian agent based in BARKLEY SOUND near the site of what would be BAMFIELD, making him the first settler in the sound.
