COLQUITZ MENTAL HOME, the first institution for the criminally insane in BC, opened 25 Mar 1919 on 10 ha of land in SAANICH north of VICTORIA. It was created to relieve crowding at the province's other two mental institutions, the Public Hospital for the Insane (see WOODLANDS) in NEW WESTMINSTER and Essondale, now RIVERVIEW, in COQUITLAM.
