ELKFORD, district municipality, pop 2,589 (2001), lies in the ELK R Valley in the E KOOTENAY 60 km north of FERNIE. At elevation 1,299 m it is the highest community in Canada. The land was purchased from Mathias Baher, a legendary Elk R Valley trapper and guide, and was incorporated 16 July 1971 as a townsite for the FORDING INC open-pit COAL mine.
