HOSMER, pop 123, is on the ELK R, 11 km north of FERNIE, in the COAL belt of the E KOOTENAY. The CPR, through its subsidiary the Pacific Coal Co, began mining here in 1908, but the town's future was cut short in 1914 when the mine shut down due to poor-quality coal. Hosmer was named for Charles R. Hosmer, a former CPR executive and one of the founders of the WEST KOOTENAY POWER & LIGHT CO.
