Malahat Drive

MALAHAT DRIVE is a 16-km stretch of the Island Hwy (part of the TRANS-CANADA HWY) across Malahat Mt on VANCOUVER ISLAND. It begins at GOLDSTREAM PROVINCIAL PARK about 20 km north of VICTORIA. Originally a TRAIL made in 1862 for driving livestock, it was improved to a wagon road 2 years later and then paved in 1911. The summit, 31 km north of Victoria, offers splendid views of SAANICH INLET. The local Salish people (see SALISHAN FIRST NATIONS) know the summit as Yos and consider it a sacred site.
