Morrissey


MORRISSEY, 60 km east of CRANBROOK in the valley of the ELK R, had a brief but vivid life as a COAL mining centre in the early 1900s. The collieries—Morrissey, Tonkin and Carbonado—were owned by the Crow's Nest Pass Coal Co, a subsidiary of the GREAT NORTHERN RWY. The coal company had its own line, the Morrissey, Field & Michel, to serve its mines here and at Coal Creek (see FERNIE; CROWS NEST SOUTHERN RWY). The coal was not suitable for making coke, however, and the MINING was abandoned...
