OBLATES OF MARY IMMACULATE are a congregation of ROMAN CATHOLIC priests founded in 1816 by Eugene de Mazenod in the diocese of Marseilles, France. The Oblates became a missionary congregation with priests and lay brothers going to Oregon in the 1840s. Honoré-Timothée Lempfrit, one of the Oregon missionaries, went for a brief period to assist Modeste DEMERS, the Catholic bishop of VANCOUVER ISLAND, then other Oregon Oblates moved north into Demers's territory in 1858.
