PARKSVILLE, city, pop 10,993 (2006), is on the east coast of VANCOUVER ISLAND overlooking GEORGIA STRAIT, 37 km north of NANAIMO. Known originally as Englishman's River after the nearby river, it was named in 1890 for the first postmaster, Nelson Parks. Farm settlement began in the 1870s and it was a regular stop on the wagon road from Nanaimo to PORT ALBERNI after it opened in 1886.
