Sarita

SARITA, on the east side of BARKLEY SOUND at the mouth of the Sarita R, 45 km south of PORT ALBERNI, was a winter village of the Huu-ay-aht (Ohiaht) people, who are part of the NUU-CHAH-NULTH Nation. It was the site of an early VANCOUVER ISLAND Catholic mission (1877) and a pilchard reduction plant in the 1920s and 1930s (see SARDINE, PACIFIC). BLOEDEL, STEWART & WELCH had a large LOGGING camp here from 1947 to 1959.
