Sproat Lake


SPROAT LAKE, 37.8 sq km, 25 km long with 3 ragged arms at its eastern end, lies just west of PORT ALBERNI on VANCOUVER ISLAND. It drains via the Sproat and SOMASS rivers, major SALMON spawning streams, into the head of ALBERNI INLET. Part of the traditional territory of the Opetchesaht FIRST NATION of the NUU-CHAH-NULTH (Nootka) people, it is the site of well-known petroglyphs showing mythical marine creatures visible along the lakeshore (see ROCK ART).
