TROUP, James, steamboat captain (b Feb 1855, Vancouver, WA; d 1931, Victoria). As a young man he piloted steamboats on the Columbia R on the American side of the border. He came to BC in 1883 and joined the CANADIAN PACIFIC NAVIGATION CO, which had just been organized by his friend John IRVING. Later he took charge of the COLUMBIA & KOOTENAY STEAM NAVIGATION CO on KOOTENAY LK, which the CPR purchased in 1897.
