VALENCIA () , a 77-m iron steamship that worked out of San Francisco, ran aground east of PACHENA PT on the west coast of VANCOUVER ISLAND in Jan 1906. Rescue attempts failed and the ship was dashed to pieces on the rocks. It was the worst marine disaster on the West Coast: 126 of 164 passengers and crew died. This led to construction of the West Coast Lifesaving Trail, the forerunner of today's WEST COAST TRAIL. See also DISASTERS....
