MANDARTE ISLAND, a bare white rock in HARO STRAIT east of SIDNEY ISLAND off the SAANICH PENINSULA, supports the largest seabird colony in GEORGIA STRAIT. More than 8,000 birds nest on the island, which is a FIRST NATIONS reserve. It is the only place in BC where rhinoceros AUKLETS and tufted PUFFINS breed in protected waters and has more CORMORANTS and pigeon GUILLEMOTS than any other place in the province.
