NEEDLES, 70 km northwest of CASTLEGAR, was a CPR sternwheeler stop on the west side of Lower ARROW LK; a car ferry later began crossing to FAUQUIER at the same site. There was a small AGRICULTURAL and orchard (see TREE FRUITS) settlement here, originally named Fire Valley after the region's frequent FOREST FIRES, but it was abandoned when the KEENLEYSIDE DAM caused water levels to rise. The name comes from the spits of sand that ran into the lake.
