OYAMA, pop 1,000, lies on a narrow isthmus separating Wood and KALAMALKA lakes east of OKANAGAN LK, 16 km north of KELOWNA. It is part of the LAKE COUNTRY District (pop 9,007), which also includes OKANAGAN CENTRE, WINFIELD and SUNNYWOLD (Carr's Landing). The townsite was established in 1908 to serve the surrounding orchards. It was named for Japanese Prince Iwao Oyama, a hero in the Russo-Japanese war.
