Salmo


SALMO, village, pop 1,140 (2021), is 39 km east of CASTLEGAR on the Salmo R. Salmo is Latin for SALMON, a reference to the fish that were plentiful before dam construction destroyed the runs. The village began as a siding on the NELSON & FORT SHEPPARD RWY, constructed in 1893, and was the centre of the rich SHEEP CREEK MINING area until the 1950s.
